Morale boost for Home ahead of Rams battle



Home United head into Thursday evening’s Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League fixture against Woodlands Wellington at Jalan Besar Stadium in positive mood, after being boosted by the commitment of Korean head coach Lee Lim Saeng to lead them for the 2013 season.

A statement released by the two-time domestic league winners squashed any rumours of the former World Cup 1998 defender leaving Bishan Stadium after three seasons that saw them end a five-year trophy drought with the RHB Singapore Cup triumph last year.

Lee had earlier made a post on social media site Facebook suggesting that his time with the Protectors could be at an end, but club chairman Anselm Lopez, who had recently succeeded Koh Siong Ling, moved swiftly to secure his services.

Although Home are going to end the 2012 campaign without any silverware to show for, they will be looking to cement their position as the second-best local club in a top half that significantly features all three of the league’s foreign sides.

Presently fifth in the standings following results from Wednesday evening, the Protectors need a positive result to extend the gap between themselves and Balestier Khalsa, who are the next best local side after them.

The fight to be Singapore’s second best could come into play should league leaders Tampines Rovers complete the Singapore Cup and S.League double in a week, therefore affecting qualification for the AFC Cup 2013.

Under existing rules, two spots have been reserved for Singaporean sides in the competition, to be filled by the league champions and the winners of the domestic cup tournament, in this case the Singapore Cup.

In the event Tampines win both, then normally the league runners-up would take the second spot, but DPMM FC of Brunei, Malaysian side Harimau Muda and Japanese outfit Albirex Niigata (Singapore) are all ineligible, as none of them are Singaporean.

In such a scenario, it will come down to a decision by the AFC on whether to invite SAFFC as Cup runners-up or Home as the best-placed local side in the league after the Stags.

The decision is not one that Lee or even Lopez can influence, but the least they can do is to push themselves as high up the table as possible, and winning the game on Thursday goes one step towards that.

But it would not be easy for the local powerhouses to overcome the cellar dwellers, as they are likely to head into this match with a very thin senior squad.

They needed a last-gasp injury-time goal from fullback Jeremy Chiang to secure three points against a spirited Tanjong Pagar United outfit the last time out, and they can expect similarly stubborn resistance from Woodlands.

Even though the northerners have secured the unwanted record of finishing bottom three seasons in a row, their performances this year are a huge improvement over the ridiculed and short-lived era of R. Balasubramaniam, Salim Moin’s predecessor as head coach last season.

The Rams have demonstrated plenty of spirit, skill and determination in battling against higher-ranked opponents this term, but lacked the ingenuity and guile for the breakthrough their work rate deserved.

In fact, they are still awaiting their third victory of the campaign, which witnessed a prolonged slide after beginning on the best note possible with two successive wins against Geylang United and the Courts Young Lions in February.

While the Woodlands management would be relieved that the league authorities’ introduction of a S$50,000 ‘fine’ for the team finishing last will not kick in until next year, the disappointment of ending up in that position was palpable enough among the club staff.

It certainly showed after a 1-2 home loss to title contenders DPMM FC over the weekend, as the Rams were equal to the Bruneians in the main, even taking the lead before the visitors’ heart and grit won the day for them.

With Prime League defender Zulkarnain Malik suspended after receiving two yellow cards against the Wasps, Danny Chew is the likeliest candidate to claim the rightback spot, though K. Sathiaraj is also available.

Salim will also be hoping Lebanese-Australian Hussein Akil will have recovered from his injury in time to play some part at Jalan Besar.

While the injury list is relatively short at Woodlands, for whom Fabien Lewis has shown few ill effects of the injury that had kept him out for so long, Home are not so lucky.

Regulars Lionel Lewis, Shi Jiayi and Qiu Li remain unavailable for selection as they recover from injuries, while Central African Republic international Franklin Anzite remains a doubt as he struggles to overcome a persistent knee problem.

Sofiyan Abdul Hamid is meanwhile suspended for the match after picking up his ninth booking of the season against Tanjong Pagar, making him the first person to do so this year.

Nazri Sabri is set to continue deputising between the posts, but there could be outfield concerns for Lee, who may be forced to field either Rosman Sulaiman or Rhysh Roshan Rai despite both being less than fully fit.

The positive news is that veteran forward Indra Sahdan Daud is available as well, and he could start against the Rams if the need arises.

This may be a match of little consequence in terms of races at both ends of the table, there is still the matter of pride, which means both sides will be unwilling to let themselves down in this curious fixture at Jalan Besar.
