Bacina set to put friendship aside


It will be a battle of wits between two Croatian coaches when title hopefuls DPMM FC of Brunei travel to northeastern Singapore to take on Hougang United on Wednesday evening. Wasps coach Vjeran Simunic will be no stranger to his Hougang counterpart Nenad Bacina, despite the former’s absence from the league since 2009. That year, the two coaches squared off once in opposite dugouts while Bacina was in charge of Woodlands Wellington.

The occasion was a League Cup semifinals battle, in which Simunic came out on top with a 2-1 win en route to a first piece of silverware in their maiden season in the S.League. Some comments made by Simunic on that occasion had left Bacina badly unruffled, yet as the 41-year-old revealed, the history between the two began way before that – and not always in such an acrimonious state.

“We came from the same city of Split in Croatia, and we’re both passionate about football,” he told sleague.com. “When I was playing in the Croatian top division with Mladost 127 in 1997, he was coaching at a second division club which is just nearby. That’s when we met each other.”

Bacina never played under Simunic, as he soon left for greener pastures in Singapore, where he signed with SAFFC – and the rest, as S.League followers know well, is history.Still, he maintains healthy respect for a man 17 years his senior.

“He’s a good coach who is coaching a good team,” commented Bacina.“Their results have proved his worth – he won the 2009 League Cup as well this year’s, and moreover there’re still fighting for championship. So they’ll be highly motivated for this clash.”

With 25 days separating Hougang’s last league game against SAFFC and this latest clash, Bacina managed to arrange friendly matches with two clubs at opposite ends of the table, chalking up similar results.A surprise 5-1 drubbing of Tampines Rovers two weeks ago was followed by a 4-1 victory over Bacina’s former employers Woodlands last week.

With such perfect tuning-up going into this game, and riding on a nine-match unbeaten run in the league, Bacina’s Cheetahs should be brimming with confidence. Yet the coach himself was wary about the very side that inflicted upon his charges their heaviest defeat of the season.

”In terms of performances and results (in the two friendlies), I’m satisfied,” he declared.“But it’ll be different in a competitive game. We’re playing a contender for the title, and they’re the only team to score five goals against us this season, so I hold the full respect for them.”

Despite a very positive second round, one should not overlook the frailty in the Cheetahs’ ability to close out games – or lack thereof. Their last four home games yielded one point each, and it can be argued that the tally should have been higher if they had held on to leads in three of them – against Tampines, Woodlands and SAFFC.

With SAFFC winning on Monday against Gombak United, Hougang know that finishing in seventh spot is not in their hands, as they trail the Warriors by four points with two games to play. Yet Bacina refused to be disheartened when discussing the subject.

“We’re still mathematically in with a chance to finish seventh, so we have obligations to ourselves and the fans to try and achieve that,” he insisted.

Discounting long-term injury victim Stanislav Vidakovic, midfielder Ante Barac is the only doubt in Bacina’s team selection after getting a knock on his right calf during training. The Croatian playmaker is expected to make the bench at the minimum, though.

If Barac can start, he may well end up causing a few headaches for Simunic, who will be without the services of the suspended Subhi Abdilah, as well as Brazilian defender Tales dos Santos, who is already ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Subhi had picked up his fourth yellow card in the Bruneians’ last outing against Woodlands, a game where they found the league’s bottom side a surprisingly tough nut to crack.

Having needed to cancel out a Rams goal scored by Guntur Djafril, the Wasps only edged that affair through a Rosmin Kamis cross that somehow evaded a stretching Ahmadulhaq Che Omar.

Try telling the 58-year-old that the win took luck, however, and he would launch one of his typical fierce rebuttals, going so far as to claim his side deserved much more.

“In the S.League, the top team and the bottom team are equal; just look at the game between Albirex (Niigata (Singapore)) and Geylang (United) game on Saturday,” he thundered. “I’m very happy with our performance against Woodlands, considering we came back from 0-1 down after missing a penalty. “I’m quite angry when I read the papers the next day saying we’re lucky and the referee helped us! “(Ivan) Jerkovic had a goal ruled offside although Fabien Lewis played him on. No one saw that, and it should have been 3-1 to us!”

2-1 or 3-1, it would have been three points to the Bruneians, and those three points allowed them to stay in the title race for another week.

They will have to replicate that come Wednesday, in order to stand any realistic chance of claiming their first-ever S.League title. Four points adrift of Tampines with an inferior goal difference, a loss against Hougang will kill off any hopes of catching up, while a draw will not do their chances any good either.

Cue the fighting words from Simunic.

“For us, this will be our biggest game of the season,” he declared.“It’ll be nice if we’re still alive in the title race after this match, as it can do our small country proud. However, if it does not happen, I’m still proud with what we’ve done in these 22 games so far in battling with teams like Tampines, SAFFC, (Harimau) Muda and Home (United).

“The most important thing is to do our best in this game, be it getting three points or one point. Muda’s a good team which can cause Tampines problems (in their last game), and we’ll be ready if that happens.”

Despite having six players one yellow card away from suspension, Simunic revealed that he would not fear being reduced to fielding a weakened side in their last game against Balestier Khalsa.

“I’ve spoken to all of them, and they all want to play in the final game at Bandar Seri Begawan,” he told sleague.com. “But I trust this squad to do the job. In the 2009 (League Cup) final, I missed some important players, but still managed to win, so I trust everyone to do the job.”
