Chitrakar eyeing good end for Young Lions

One of two matches being conducted on Thursday evening in the final days of the Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League 2012 season, the Courts Young Lions’ hosting of Home United at Jalan Besar Stadium may have more riding on it than many may realise at first glance.

There is of course the desire on the part of the hosts to end the year’s programme on a winning note, after almost pulling off a shock upset at Jurong East Stadium five days earlier against Albirex Niigata (Singapore).

But the eyes of the Young Lions players may be cast beyond the shores of Singapore, as a number of them could be keen to prove that they are worthy of a place in a revamped Under-23 side to participate in the Malaysian Super League next season.

Two players who are certainly ineligible for such a prospect are forward Jonathan Toto and midfielder Benjamin Lee, owing to the fact that both are foreigners.

But both played leading roles in the game against Albirex as their goals gave their team a 2-0 lead, with Toto showing an abundance of pace and cool finishing, while Lee showed some silky touches – making both useful presences who can inspire others to shine with them.

Bringing the highest quality out of the players may be the most Robin Chitrakar can hope for, since the Young Lions coach cannot count on an abundance of personnel at his disposal.

“I am struggling to get 18 players together for tomorrow’s game,” he confided to sleague.com on the eve of the game, following a light-hearted training session at Jalan Besar.

“I have a few injuries, but no suspensions, thankfully. Shamil Sharif picked up a calf injury at training on Monday and could not stretch out today, and I’ll be surprised if we can use him at all tomorrow.

“I can’t play Shannon Stephen (Ratnagopal) either, as he played a full 90 minutes for his Republic Polytechnic side today. Apart from not being able to train with the team, he would be too tired, most probably.

“I know I named Shahfiq (Ghani) on the bench against Albirex, but he was really in no condition to play. He and Emmeric (Ong) trained today, but they are still tired from their trip to Australia (on National Service commitments), and I’m not sure I’ll be starting either of them at this stage.

“At least the players are still enjoying their training and are looking forward to playing the game, our last of the season,” he continued.

“It’s going to be a tough game, as Home United have so much more experience compared to us. But I know the players will give them a good run for their money, all the same.”

One piece of good news for Chitrakar is the expected return of Fazli Ayob, who was absent for the clash against Albirex.

The former Geylang United winger has been named Singapore’s 35-man provisional squad for the AFF Suzuki Cup tournament that kicks off at the end of the month, a piece of news that brought a smile to Chitrakar’s face.

“I was delighted to see Fazli Ayob called up for the Suzuki Cup squad, and he deserves that chance,” he noted.

“I’m pleased to say Fazli Ayob is back for this game, and we’re going to need him against a strong side like Home United. We have to keep the tempo of the game going for the full 90 minutes and not slacken off.

“The boys did really well against Albirex last Saturday, and they created plenty of chances, only they didn’t put enough of them away. We gave away a goal from a free kick, which was a bit soft, and we needed to do better in defending after we were two goals up.

“They can go out and enjoy themselves in this last game.”

By ‘last game’ Chitrakar might not have necessarily have meant the last game of the year, as some of his fledglings may find themselves moving over to the LionsXII squad featuring in the Malaysian Super League next season.

It was a point the 36-year-old readily acknowledged, such is his team’s role in developing the next generation of talent looking to challenge for honours in the name of the nation.

To that end, the Young Lions often find themselves busy, and the same is true this year, even after this league season finishes.

“Many of my players will be continuing to train, as we have a few more games coming up in various tournaments, and some will be considered for the national team,” noted Chitrakar.

“Apart from the Nex tournament here soon, there are a couple matches against Pakistan that some of my players may be involved in later in the month, though we don’t have full details of those yet.

“For some, this game against Home may be their last in Courts Young Lions colours, as they will be included in the LionsXII next season. But I still have a few who can play for the team for another five years, even though National Service will take up some of that time.

“The players really enjoyed their training tonight, and I am sure they are going to enjoy the game tomorrow and finish the season off well.”

Finishing on a high note should please the fans, and it may not be that remote a prospect, considering how their opponents have fared of late.

The Protectors may be the better-placed team on the competition ladder, but their last two games were not that impressive, as they managed only a slender 2-1 win over Tanjong Pagar United at Bishan Stadium and a 0-0 draw against Woodlands Wellington coming into this game.

That sort of form does not engender much confidence among those backing Home, especially on a pitch where they rarely excel.

A 0-0 draw against Albirex back in August was probably typical of their achievements at the venue, and losses at the hands of Tampines Rovers and SAFFC on this unforgiving surface showed that they enjoyed no special powers against the better teams either.

These have contributed to a season which could be described as miserable, but Home would not want to lose this match against the Young Lions, not when there is a chance to write off those low-key results with a far more positive finish.

Admittedly manpower was a concern for Lee Lim Saeng when he brought his charges to Jalan Besar for their previous match against Woodlands, but in the circumstances, the 0-0 draw was neither unexpected nor all that poor.

For one reason or another, captain Shi Jiayi, goalkeeper Lionel Lewis, defender Rosman Sulaiman and striker Qiu Li were all absent against Woodlands.

The impact of missing the quartet was thoroughly felt as Indra Sahdan Daud and Frederic Mendy had fewer chances to create problems for the Rams up front than they might normally have done, and it was as much as Lee could do to muster adequate replacements for his bench.

This game looms as being little better for the Protectors, but they can at least welcome the return of Sofiyan Abdul Hamid from suspension to give an additional pair of legs.

Whether that will be enough to stop the Young Lions from enjoying their game will be most intriguing to see.

No question of motivation for Bok

SAFFC conclude their roller-coaster Great Eastern-YEO’S S.League 2012 season on Thursday evening with a visit to Bedok Stadium, home to another established name in local football in the form of Geylang United.

Interestingly, these two teams were the leading lights in the inaugural S.League season 16 years ago, but both have not had that much success of late, standing much farther from the top than their history justifies.

Yet it is to the future that both sides must look, not back upon that long history, as they embark on the preparatory work going into yet another new year.

For SAFFC, there is at least some relief in the form of silverware, after departing coach Richard Bok added a third RHB Singapore Cup success to his already-impressive resume on Sunday.

Bok hands over the reins of control to his assistant V. Selvaraj after this match at Bedok, and with many of the players already tied to the club for another year, a new challenge beckons in 2013 when they return to the continental stage after missing out for two years.

But that is next year’s story; the end of the current season offers little in terms of motivation in itself, especially as the Warriors are locked in at seventh spot in the league regardless of how they fare on Thursday.

Bok, however, felt confident that his charges will maintain their professionalism for his final assignment at SAFFC when he spoke with sleague.com at the end of training on Wednesday.

“I won’t have to motivate them,” said the three-time MIKASA Coach of the Year.

“They are going to go out there and do their best, as always.”

Winning the Singapore Cup came at some expense for Bok’s charges, who had to fight all the way into injury time before Erwan Gunawan’s strike ensured there was no need to play an extra 30 minutes of football.

Having fielded a full-strength team for that match against Tampines Rovers, Bok revealed that he would be using the Geylang outing to give his squad players some game time, especially those who had not broken a sweat on Sunday.

“Guys like (Marin) Jonjic, Eddie (Chang) and Bah (Mamadou) will be playing,” noted the 43-year-old.

“I have 18 players, just enough (to rotate a few)!”

Geylang fans hoping to see a weakened SAFFC side may think this declaration by Bok could offer hope of an easy encounter, but they would do well to recall what had happened the last time the Warriors had done so.

A team fielded in accordance with the same rotation policy ended up giving Bok his biggest win this season only a week ago, when Gombak United travelled to Choa Chu Kang and ended up on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline.

SAFFC will not be the only ones hungry to prove themselves, however.

Geylang coach Kanan Vedhamuthu had inherited a leaking ship from current national team assistant coach Mike Wong, who had left his job in March after the Eagles had opened the season with three consecutive defeats.

Kanan proceeded to stop the gaps and lead the men in white and green to their first home win of the season in only his second game in charge, beating Balestier Khalsa 3-1.

Although this was followed by two consecutive losses, the team began to present opponents with more of a challenge than before, with arguably their high point coming in the StarHub League Cup campaign.

That tournament saw them pull off a string of shocks to reach the final, beating such fancied sides as Albirex Niigata (Singapore) and tournament favourites Tampines, before falling to DPMM FC in a tightly-fought final.

Their last match, a 1-3 loss to Malaysia’s Harimau Muda, may have halted a three-match unbeaten run for Geylang, but the fact that the Eagles would not have thought such a run possible at the start of the season speaks volumes about how confidence has risen among the players.

The fact that many young players have emerged from this transitional season has also pleased Kanan tremendously, with Amy Recha Samion and Fabian Kwok among the brightest of the prospects rising from his Prime League-winning squad last year.

Also shining in the white and green of Geylang this year are wingback Ang Zhi Wei, midfielder-turned-forward Jozef Kaplan and Frenchman Stefan Milojevic, the latter a mid-season signing brought to the club by Kanan himself.

Milojevic will have no chance to repay the faith of his coach against SAFFC, however, as he is suspended, along with Kwok, after both were booked in the Harimau Muda clash last week.

Those yellow cards were the fourth for each of them, so they must content themselves with a place in the stands, but others like Ang and Kaplan are expected to feature as Kanan and the Geylang management cast their eyes upon the future.

That future must wait for another three months, though, and with little to fight for in terms of standings this season, this battle at Bedok could justifiably be dubbed “The Hunger Game”.

Winning will be of little consequence to either side in the immediate term, but a strong performance will reflect favourably upon the teams’ ambitions going forward.
