With one eye firmly cast upon the RHB Singapore Cup final this Sunday, SAFFC head coach Richard Bok finds himself needing to carefully choose his squad for the club’s penultimate S.League game of the season, which comes this Monday evening against Gombak United.

After a tough match last Friday against Cup final opponents Tampines Rovers, which ended in a heartbreaking 2-3 defeat, Bok has promised to ring in the changes to the team to give the Warriors the best preparation they can get ahead of the biggest match of their season.

Certainly much has been taken out of the players after that draining battle on Friday, where they were kept on their toes throughout by the title-chasing Stags and had to defend fearlessly against the onslaught of attacks that crashed against the back four.

Twice they took the lead, the second occasion coming as late as six minutes before the end, but conceding two late goals, with the winner coming from Tampines substitute Jamil Ali deep into injury time, would have drained any side emotionally.

Given only 72 hours to get back into business, the Warriors are likely to introduce changes in personnel as they prepare for the Cup final, the one chance they have to make amends for what, by their lofty standards, has been a disappointing season.

A mid-table finish in the league and an exit in the StarHub League Cup at the semifinals stage to eventual winners DPMM FC of Brunei leaves them with little to cheer about, and the only way to save their season is to take the Singapore Cup back to Choa Chu Kang Stadium.

Knowing that he will need his best men to deal with Tampines again, Bok will have to manage his priorities when SAFFC host the Bulls in what is a relatively inconsequential league fixture.

The three-time MIKASA Coach of the Year revealed that he will be resting several key players for the Gombak match, but stopped short of saying who the players he will leave out are.

“I’ll be resting some players to give others a chance to play in this second last game of the season,” he told sleague.com.

“I’ve said a couple of weeks ago that I’ll rotate the players, so this is a chance for me to do so. It is the same thing that I did in 2007 and 2008, when I rotated the players just before the Singapore Cup final, and we won!

“My eye is on the final as I make the selection for this one.

“Not all the places in the starting eleven have been decided, and there are still places to fight for. I still have some players in my mind that I haven’t decided on yet.”

The encounter with Gombak will be Bok’s final match at the Warriors’ Arena, as he is set to leave the club he has helmed since 2006.

Just like any other match, he is hoping to get three points from this one to mark his swansong in front of the home fans.

“I’ve lost track of the number, but it is probably over 200 games across all competitions played at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium,” recalled Bok on the number of occasions he has been in charge.

“I am confident that whoever I choose to play will raise their game, and hopefully the whole team will be able to give me the victory.

“Just like in any game played by any team, we want the three points. There is no exception to that.”

Bok is not unfamiliar with the Gombak side coached this year by K. Balagumaran, having crossed paths with the latter three times this year.

Coincidentally, all three occasions were won by SAFFC by a 1-0 margin.

A late Shimpei Sakurada strike gave the Warriors the points in their first league meeting in May, and the Bulls were also the team that SAFFC overcame across two legs in the Singapore Cup semifinals.

The closeness of the scoreline in each case certainly indicates the minimal difference between the two teams, and even in the league table, there is not much to separate the two teams.

SAFFC are currently in seventh spot in the league with 29 points, only one point ahead of eighth-placed Hougang United, as well as Gombak, who are in ninth.

With so little between the teams, the Monday encounter looks set to be a cracking one as the joust for mid-table positions plays out.

Gombak are a tough team to play against,” analysed Bok.

“They have many fast and experienced players like Mustaqim (Manzur), K. Vikraman, Hafiz (Rahim) and even their tall Korean striker (Jung Hee Bong). They are always a difficult team to play against.

“In our previous match (against Tampines), we defended well, but just lacked some concentration. So we’ll have to see how we perform against another opponent this time.”

The good news for Bok is that none of his players will be suspended for this match, with Razaleigh Khalik returning from the one-match suspension that kept him out of the Tampines game last week.

Balagumaran will similarly have no suspension issues limiting his side, although Adrian Dhanaraj continues to be a long-term casualty.

The former national youth couch will hope to see his charges finish above SAFFC this season, and that is what they will be playing for in the final two weeks.

Revenge for previous defeats to the Warriors will also certainly pump the players up to do their best at Choa Chu Kang.
